Son grand-père était britannique et a épousé une Alsacienne à Paris avant la Première Guerre mondiale. Ils se sont installés à Pau et le père de l'interviewé est né à Pau. Le grand-père a eu la nationalité britannique toute sa vie, mais il a vécu et travaillé à Pau. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le père de l'interviewée a été envoyé en Irlande du Nord, où il a rencontré la mère de l'interviewée. Ils sont revenus à Pau en 1947, et l'interviewé a été scolarisée dans la ville. La famille possédait un magasin dans le centre de Pau, Old England, où l’on travaillait comme tailleur et vendait des biens en provenance du Royaume-Uni. John Carter a déménagé à Glasgow où il a étudié pour devenir dessinateur industriel. Il s'est engagé dans la Royal Air Force et a commencé à travailler pour l'Aérospatiale. Il s’est marié avec une Française. Il a postulé pour un emploi en Allemagne et ils ont passé la majeure partie de la vie professionnelle dans ce pays, jusqu'à ce qu'il prenne sa retraite à l'âge de 65 ans. Ils ont décidé de revenir à Pau, qu'il considère comme chez lui et où se trouvent ses racines. Male born in 1943 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, but he grew up for most of his youth in Pau. His grandfather was British and married a woman from Alsace in Paris before the First World War. They moved to Pau, and the interviewee’s father was born in Pau. The grandfather had British nationality all of his life, but he lived and worked in Pau. During World War II, the interviewee’s father got sent to Northern Ireland, and this is where he met the interviewee’s mother. They moved back to Pau in 1947, and the interviewee was schooled in the city. The family had a shop in the centre of Pau called Old England, and they worked as tailors and sold goods from the United Kingdom. John Carter moved to Glasgow where he studied to become an engineering draughtsman. He joined the Royal Air Force and started working for Aérospatiale. He is married to a French woman. He applied for a job in Germany, and they spent most of their working life in Germany, until he retired at the age of 65. They decided to return to Pau, where he considers it to be his home, and where his roots are. |
